While Daniel Vézina has earned his status as a culinary legend, his true secret is his devotion to pleasing his guests. His contemporary style of cuisine is characterized by an emphasis on essential ingredients and Quebec’s regional flavours.
Daniel Vézina graduated with a cooking diploma from Polyvalente de Charlesbourg in 1979. He has worked in the restaurant industry for almost 35 years.
Daniel Vézina opened Laurie Raphaël with his wife Suzanne Gagnon in 1991. In 1996, this renowned restaurant located in the Old Port of Quebec City moved to its current location on rue Dalhousie.
Since 2005, Laurie Raphaël has offered a modern gastronomic experience, with a concept that includes restaurants, a workshop and shops.
In the autumn of 2007, Laurie Raphaël opened a second restaurant in Montreal. Located in Hôtel Le Germain, this fabulous fine dining restaurant can accommodate up to 55 people and has a shop on the ground floor.
In 2013 Raphaël Vezina, son of the owners, was named Chef at Laurie Raphaël Quebec City. In just 2 years he went from being an employee to being the boss! Suzanne Gagnon and Daniel Vézina are proud of his leadership, boundless creativity and business acumen. A great Chef in the making!
In 2005, Daniel Vézina began sharing his knowledge with others by giving cooking classes at the Workshop of the Quebec City restaurant. He also holds VIP evenings, where students are invited to enjoy the many services he prepares during his classes.

Daniel Vézina, Suzanne Gagnon and Raphaël Vézina are entrepreneurs who are very involved in a variety of causes that are important to them, including La Fondation de la greffe de la moelle osseuse de l’Est du Québec (Health), Le Regroupement des cuisines collectives (Social Commitment), Fondation Serge-Bruyère (Professional) and the Orchestre symphonique de Québec (Culture), just to name a few!
The TV and Radio Host
From 1996 to 2000, Daniel Vézina co-hosted the Radio-Canada television show Attention, c’est chaud with Suzanne Lapointe. He also participated in several other shows, including Des kiwis et des hommes, Passeport pour la gourmandise, Tout le monde à table, À la Di Stasio and Pour le plaisir, not to mention his collaboration on several radio programs. In 2010, he hosted his own show L’effet Vézina on the Zest television network. He then returned to Zest for a second consecutive year, this time accompanied by his son Raphaël, to host L’effet Vézina, de père en chef. For a fifth season, he is co-host and coach for participants on the popular TV show Les chefs! on ICI Radio-Canada television.
Daniel Vézina wrote a monthly newspaper article in La Presse from 2003 to 2008, where he discussed many culinary topics, recipes, cooking tips and nutritional information.
He has published five critically acclaimed cookbooks. His first book, Daniel Vézina en direct du Laurie Raphaël (1997), was followed by Ma route des saveurs au Québec (2001) and Le fruit de ma passion (2005). His fourth book, L’atelier de Daniel Vézina (2012), contains more than 100 techniques and basic recipes. Daniel Vézina’s latest book, L’atelier de Daniel Veézina: Mes classiques préférés (2013) is yet another engaging and instructional book from one of Quebec’s most respected Chefs.
